If you are a Northern transplant, you may not be prepared for a Southern Christmas! Some things are completely the same, like putting up a Christmas tree, spending time with friends and family, or eating a huge holiday feast. Some things, however, are decidedly different. For example, you may be running your air conditioning on Christmas Day inside your Charlotte, NC apartment!

This post is going to show you how to enjoy a Charlotte Christmas that is full of Southern Charm whether this is your first year in the Queen City or your tenth.

Southern Christmas Destinations

There are a few places in the South where you can get Christmas charm by the bucketful. So, if you are the type that likes to travel for the holidays, here are a few places that you should consider.

Asheville: Rent a cabin in the mountains surrounding Asheville for a lovely Christmas experience. The weather will be a little more similar to a chilly Northern winter, and you may get lucky enough to see a little snow. The Biltmore House does a lovely holiday display that will round out your trip quite nicely.

The Beach: Santa loves to make an ocean-side visit, so take your family to the coast for the season where you can spend your holiday strolling on the nearly empty beaches. The area beaches along the NC coast can be reached in just a few hours drive from your Charlotte, NC apartment, and you can dine on shrimp and grits for your Christmas day meal.

Savannah: If you want to add a little history to your holiday celebration, spend Christmas in Savannah, GA. Here, you will find historic Southern homes decked out in garlands and holly. Your carriage ride through the city will be a magical experience, and if you stay through the New Year, you can get your party on down on River Street.

Charlotte Christmas Activities

If you are more of a homebody or just don't have the vacation time to take a trek out of the city, don't despair! There are plenty of fun holiday activities that you can enjoy right here in the fair Queen City!

Visit Christmas Town: Just a few exits down on 85, you will find McAdenville, NC … or as it is better known, Christmas Town, USA. This small town is decorated from one end to the other, and you will find over 100,000 lights shining as you drive down the main street. The lights are shining every night during the month of December, but beware, the lines can get extremely long as it nears Christmas day.

The Singing Christmas Tree: Each year, for the last 62 years, the Carolina Voices has put on a holiday celebration like no other. The performance takes place at the Knight Theater in Uptown, and the tickets start at about $13.

Speedway Christmas: The drive-through light show at the Charlotte Motor Speedway is a spectacular event for all ages. The 3.75-mile course is decked out in over 3 million lights! This family-friendly event has been a Charlotte Christmas staple for the last nine years.

Southern Christmas Foods

There are some foods that just absolutely must make it to the table on a Southern holiday meal. So, if you are hosting the Christmas celebrations at your Charlotte, NC apartment, make sure your table has these delectables.

Christmas Ham: You have to have a ham on Christmas day in the South. The best ham comes from Smithfield, in Virginia, or Benton's in Tennessee, but at the very least, you have to have a Honey Baked Ham on offer for the main course.

Sweet Potato Casserole: One-part side dish and one-part dessert, sweet potato casserole is buttery, sweet, and delicious.

Fruit Cake: It is probable that no one actually eats the fruitcake, but it is still a Christmas tradition that someone must at least bring one to every holiday celebration. Other than homemade, the only fruitcake that is acceptable is the Claxton Fruit Cake made deep down south in Claxton, Georgia.

Southern Christmas Ornaments

Before you can start your Christmas holiday parties, you must get your Charlotte, NC apartment ready with the right holiday decor. An artificial tree is best to avoid a fire hazard, and it will look extremely festive when covered with these Southern-style ornaments.

Mason Jar Lid Ornaments: Making these can be a cute family activity, or you can just buy a lot from Etsy if you don't have the time. However, if you don't have at least one mason jar used in your holiday decorations, you can hardly call yourself a Southerner.

Y'all: To really revel in your Southern roots, you need at least one ornament that says "Merry Christmas, Y'all!"

Galvanized Metal: Another type of holiday decor that screams Southern charm is anything made from galvanized metal. You can find all types of ornaments and other decorations that will look perfect in your Charlotte apartment!

Now that you are fully prepped, you will be able to celebrate your holiday season with Southern charm! Whether you stay home at your Charlotte, NC apartment and eat ham … or run off to wander the Biltmore house, you are sure to enjoy your Southern Christmas.

The high-end kitchens in our Phillips Mallard Creek Apartments are perfect for cooking a holiday meal. And each of one, two, and three-bedrooms units are spacious enough to host your friends and family.
